Product Placement: Coca-Cola and the Movies

If you are movie lover, you might be interested in this infographic about Coca-Cola product placement in the Movies:

Product placement consists in displaying a recognizable product or brand in a movie or a programme in order to increase brand awareness. Product placement is a clever marketing strategy for Coca-Cola because coke is an everyday life product so it can be easily integrated into movies. Product placement in movies is not a novelty, Coca-Cola appeared for the first time on-screen in a billboard for King Kong in 1933. It is interesting to see that cans of coke are the most showed Coca-Cola products (32%), Coca-Cola signs come second (20%) and bottles third (18%). And what about Pepsi? The main competitor of the Coca-Cola Company made its first product placement in 1961 in the Movie "One, Two, Three". Coca-Cola has managed to keep leadership in product placement over the years even thought Pepsi appeared in big blockbusters such as Back to the Future, Ghost and more recently Spider-Man 2. According to the AnyClip Brand Influence in Movie Index, Coca-Cola remains the most influential company in terms of product placement in movies.

I have seen many of the most recent movies (Jaws, E.T, Independence Day, Taxi Driver, Million Dollar Baby..) of this infographic and I was surprised because I don't remember noticing Coca-Cola products. I guess Coke is such an everyday life product that I didn't pay attention to this kind of product placement, but guess what? Maybe it is really working because I am just about to open a can of Coke and to check theatrical movie releases of the week!
